ATPase Site Architecture and Helicase Mechanism Essay
ATPase Site Architecture and Helicase Mechanism - Essay Example Studies have also indicated that a means of communication takes place between the N-terminal and the C-terminal region of archaeal MCM complexes, aiding in the overall high level of conservation possessed by the complex. The beta-7 and beta-8 regions of the N-terminal are composed of highly conservative amino acid similarities, which additionally accounts for the conservative nature of the MCM protein. Although it has been mentioned that MCM proteins are largely responsible for DNA replication and helicase activity, studies indicate as well that the MCM proteins are what not only ââ¬Å"unzipâ⬠dsDNA prior to replication but also maintain a separation between the two strands once bound together, in order to efficiently perform DNA replication and synthesis without ssDNA sticking to one another. An equally important structure, similar to MCM proteins and relavant to this topic is the GINS complex. It is necessary to touch on the function of the GINS complex when examining functions and structure of the MCM complex. The GINS complex is composed of 4 protein subunits known as paralogues. Like the MCM complex, the GINS complex is integral in DNA replication initiation and synthesis. The GINS complex works in partnership with Cdc45 (cell division control 45) in regulating the process of recruitment of DNA polymerase (pol and ) to the site of initiation and elongation. The GINS complex is also fundamental in genome duplication as shown in most vertebrates. Additional studies have indicated that the GINS complex, along with MCM proteins and Cdc45 (as well as check point factors) are all involved at replisome at paused DNA replication forks. This indicates that the human GINS complex is an equally important part of DNA replication and synthesis, to the MCM protein complex. Even more recent studies indicate that the GINS complex is present with MCM proteins 2-7 at the progressing replication fork. At this time,

Internet Access: Flat Fee Vs. Pay-per-use :: essays research papers
Internet Access: Flat Fee vs. Pay-Per-Use Most Internet users are either not charged to access information, or pay a low-cost flat fee. The Information SuperHighway, on the other hand, will likely be based upon a pay-per-use model. On a gross level, one might say that the payment model for the Internet is closer to that of broadcast (or perhaps cable) television while the model for the Information SuperHighway is likely to be more like that of pay-per-view T.V. "Pay-per-use" environments affect user access habits. "Flat fee" situations encourage exploration. Users in flat-fee environments navigate through webs of information and tend to make serendipitous discoveries. "Pay- per-use" situations give the public the incentive to focus their attention on what they know they already want, or to look for well-known items previously recommended by others. In "pay-per-use" environments, people tend to follow more traditional paths of discovery, and seldom explore totally unexpected avenues. "Pay-per-use" environments discourage browsing. Imagine how a person's reading habits would change if they had to pay for each article they looked at in a magazine or newspaper. Yet many of the most interesting things we learn about or find come from following unknown routes, bumping into things we weren't looking for. (Indeed, Thomas Kuhn makes the claim that, even in the hard sciences, real breakthroughs and interesting discoveries only come from following these unconventional routes [Kuhn, Thomas, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1962]). And people who have to pay each time they use a piece of information are likely to increasingly rely upon specialists and experts. For example, in a situation where the reader will have to pay to read each paragraph of background on Bosnia, s/he is more likely to rely upon State Department summaries instead of paying to become more generally informed him/herself. And in the 1970s and 1980s the library world learned that the introduction of expensive pay-per-use databases discouraged individual exploration and introduced the need for intermediaries who specialized in searching techniques. Producers vs. Consumers On the Internet anyone can be an information provider or an information consumer. On the Information SuperHighway most people will be relegated to the role of information consumer. Because services like "movies-on-demand" will drive the technological development of the Information SuperHighway, movies' need for high bandwidth into the home and only narrow bandwidth coming back out will likely dominate. (see Besser, Howard. "Movies on Demand May Significantly Change the Internet", Bulletin of the American Association for Information Science, October 1994) Metaphorically, this will be like a ten-lane highway coming into the home and only a tiny path leading back out (just wide enough to take a credit card number

Traffic: Road and Public Transport
?Traffic congestion in many cities around the world is severe. One possible solution to this problem is to impose heavy taxes on car drivers and use this money to make public transport better. This essay will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of such a measure. One of the first benefits of such a measure is that the heavy taxes would discourage car owners from using their cars because it would become very expensive to drive. This would mean that they would begin to make use of public transport instead, thus reducing traffic problems and pollution as well.Another benefit would be that much more use would be made of public transport if it was improved. It is often the case that public transport in cities is very poor. For example, we often see old buses and trains that people would rather not use. High taxes would generate enough money to make the necessary changes. Nevertheless, there are drawbacks to such a solution. First and foremost, this would be a heavy burden on the car driver s.At present, taxes are already high for a lot of people, and so further taxes would only mean less money at the end of the month for most people who may have no choice but to drive every day. In addition, this type of tax would likely be set at a fixed amount. This would mean that it would hit those with less money harder, whilst the rich could likely afford it. It is therefore not a fair tax. To conclude, this solution is worth considering to improve the current situation, but there are advantages and disadvantages of introducing such a policy. In modern life we have to face with many problems one of which is traffic congestion becoming more serious day after day. It is said that the high volume of vehicles, the inadequate infrastructure and the irrational distribution of the develpoment are main reasons for increasing traffic jam The major cause leading to traffic congestion is the high number of vehicle which was caused by the population and the development of economy. To solve t his problem, the government should encourage people to use public transport or vehicles with small size such as bicycles or make tax on private vehicles.Particularly, in some Asia countries such as Viet Nam, the local authorities passed law restricting to the number of vehicles for each family. The methods mentioned above is indeed effective in fact. That the inadequate infrastructure cannot handle the issue of traffic is also an crucial reason. The public transport such as bus, subway or train is not available and its quality is very bad, especially in the developing countries. Besides, the highway and road network is incapable of meeting the requirement of increasing number of vehicle.Coping with these difficulties, the government should make an investment in the traffic facilties, namely, the publc transport need improving to become more modern and convenient. In addition, it is useful to build overpasses and more lanes in the streets. Apparently, the irrational distribution and the lack of conscience make the traffic worse and worse. The head offices, the univeristies or hospitals often locate in the centre of city attracting a heavy flow of people in rush hour.To handle this situation, the government should allocate suitably , for instance some unviersity or office will be moved to the outskirt of city. It is necessary to encourage poeple obey the traffic rules which will make greatly change the problem of traffic. Finally, it's high time we were aware of the disadvatages as well as the solutions to the traffic congestion. With great effort from each individualist and government, our society will be definitely cleaner and well i organized

Support individuals in their last days of life
In the person's last days If known others may like to spend a lot of time with the person but others may not want to see them like that and just want to eave the better memories as people can't handle seeing the person looking very frail as this cannot be very nice, but it all depends on how each person can handle the situation and it is also hard as you don't know whether to expect the worst each time you go into their room as they could have passed away. It can cause a lot of stress within the home setting and people will be very sad but we have to do our best to try and keep them as happy and as calm as they can be.Common signs of approaching death, you can never know when someone Is going to die but there is always a sign such as they May- Lose their appetite the person may begin to resist or refuse to eat meals or any drink fluids. Become very fatigue or sleepy- The person may begin to sleep the majority of the day and night as metabolism slows and the decline In food and water contribute to dehydration. Physical weakness- As the person Is declining food and sleeping a lot they will find that they have no energy.Confusion or disorientation- Organs begin to fail including the brain they may start to forget where they are or what they are doing. Change in breathing- Breath intakes and exhales can become very irregular. Social withdrawal- As the body starts to shut down they may gradually lose interest in being around those that are close to them. Swelling in feet and ankles- Coolness in tips of fingers and toes. Good end of life care helps patients with life-limiting conditions to live as well as possible until they die, and to die with dignity.End of life care encompasses palliative care, which focuses on managing pain and other distressing symptoms, providing psychological, social and spiritual support to the patients, and supporting those that are close to the patient. All patients should be treated with dignity and aspect throughout the course of their c are. Patients who are dying must receive the same standard of care as all other patients. Their privacy, dignity and wishes must be respected at all times, by listening and achieving their wishes can make them feel more relaxed and less distressed.Making sure your patient has good pain relief, making sure they are always comfortable, having other people around them to keep them occupied or even little things like listening to the radio or watching television if they enjoy doing this. Making sure your patient has everything and everyone they deed around them, some people may not want to be like this some people may want to go alone and this needs to be respected even If their family members or loved ones want to be with them you have to respect the fact they want to be alone as long as they are comfortable. There are rules governing when life-prolonging treatment can be withheld or withdrawn when the patient's consent is not available, the professionals in charge of the person's care, should decide whether treatment should be continued or not. They should consider whether the treatment is in the best interests of the client in terms of quality of life and how long they will live and if the treatment is helping to improve their condition. If the patient still has the capacity to decide whether or not they want to carry on or stop with the treatment it is their own choice as they still have the capacity to their rights. Also it needs to be remembered that the client should always be center of the care. Some of the signs that death has occurred are they- Have stopped breathing No heartbeat Loss of bowel and bladder control No response Eyelids slightly open Eyes fixed on a certain spot Mouth slightly open The body cools When a client does become to near the end of life or even ill from the start you have to work with other professionals at first you may start with the GAP to diagnose the patient and they would then refer them to the hospital if required if not they w ould give you prescriptions for the right medication to treat them. You would also work with district nurses if required if a client had a bed sore. You would work with the pharmacy to make sure you receive all the medication and on time and to order when needed. A patient should be monitored regularly; everything that the patient goes should be recorded and documented correctly making sure they are legible, accurate, relevant and clear. Things that may get monitored- Food intake charts Fluid intake Charts Continence checks Positioning Chart Checking Temperature Body maps to mark if they have any bed sores If they were in pain or how much pain. Some people may not be able to tell you how much or if they are in pain so in some care homes they use pain rating scales, Faces tool, Disability distress assessment tool (Distant), Body charts/ Maps or its even suggested if the patient is able to keep a pain diary. Everyone approaching the end of life should have their needs assessed and their wishes and any preferences discussed, any actions reflecting their choices they make about the care they would like to receive should all be recorded in their own personal care plan especially as some people in advance want to refuse treatment, the care plan should be regularly reviewed.Once a client enters into the dying phase the care providers need to adapt their care and support according to the care plan, also the client may have a preferred place of death which they had discussed in their are plan this should be reviewed to make sure the care providers are aware.Advanced care planning should be completed as it gives people the opportunity to make their wishes and preferences known should they deteriorate and lose the sure all staff and any other professionals are aware and know fully of all the changes and any requirements or adjustments that need to be made such as ways of working, making sure all changes are documented in their personal care plan, in staff communication boo ks, also making sure that all risk assessments are updated, reviewed and changed as needed.Making sure the client has everything that they need to meet their needs to the changes. This also helps everyone to follow the same way of working to support the client when any changes do happen. Some family members/careers may wish to assist with the personal care in acknowledgement of individual wishes, religious or cultural requirements. If it is down to the staff to carry out this task then the Staff should be Prepared before they do this as there are changes to the body after death and they should also be aware of manual handling and infection control issues. Some people may not want their family or staff to do so, once the patient has died you should refer to their plan of care to see and follow their wishes if any after death. In private nursing homes the personal care after death is the responsibility of a registered nurse, although this and the packing of the property may be delegated to a trained healthcare assistant. The registered nurse is responsible for correctly identifying the deceased person and communicating accurately with the mortuary or funeral director (in line with local policy). In care homes without a registered nurse, he home manager is responsible for ensuring that professional careers are trained appropriately and to ensure that they are competent in their role. The death should be documented straight away the time the date and the people that are present, this also has to be reported to the care quality commission within 24 hours. After the persons death the Last offices should be carried out or some people may call it Personal care after death, two members of staff should carry out last offices but this can only be done once the death has been officially confirmed. The staff should ear all protective equipment such as gloves and apron when carrying out last offices. There is a a list of national guidelines, policies and legislations that are r equired after a death they are ââ¬â Health and Safety at work act 1974 Control of substances hazardous to health regulations 2002 (COACH) Code of Conduct Health and social care act 2008 It is always important that the care plan is referred to before after death as the client may have left their wishes and preference that they would like to be carried out and these should always be followed, as the client may have requested that they would ay have requested that their belongings should be given to a charity or some kept with them and many more examples but the point is that their wishes should always be respected and followed. All staff knows and are fully aware that when a client has passed that all procedures in place must be followed when handling the decease and moving their belongings, gloves and aprons must be worn, all of their personal belongings such as bedding, bed cloths and clothing should be disposed of in the correct way. Everyone is different to how they react to so mebody passing, there are different types f ways such as- Emotional- Sadness, anger, blame, depression and loneliness. Physical- Weakness in muscles, hollowness in stomach, tightness in throat and shortness of breath. Cognitive- A person may experience mental difficulties, such as poor concentration, forgetfulness and day dreaming.Behavioral- Some people may react by crying, loss of interest and withdrawal. Spiritual- They may start to question their spiritual beliefs but others may find solace. When telling family or friends that their loved one has passed you have to be repaired for different types of reactions as above, people should always be allowed to spend time by the deceased and their privacy should always be respected. Offering a cup of tea and going into a quiet space where they will not be disturbed so that they can talk about what happens next, sometimes people may find it hard to absorb any information so the care staff should write up a simple and clear guide for them .When talking or telling close family or friends you should always use good listening skills show empathy, always make yourself available and give people time to express themselves and talk, offer any help to register death or organize a funeral or even Just offer any advice. In a care setting the rest of the house should be told what has happened and this should not be hidden from them as they all have the right to know, they should all be told in a tactful and sensitive way. Offer support and let them know that staff will always be available if they feel they need to talk. Family or People in a care setting all have the right to be told and known about bereavement support services that are available to them. When a person dies majority or all staff care workers often experience grief, staff can attend the funeral or pay their respects in some way, by attending the funeral this will allow people to express grief and maybe bring closure. People may actively grieve by crying and it is acceptable to cry and let others know that the person will be missed, some people may be tearful or stressed then they should take time out in a quiet area. Talk to others as they might be feeling the same way as you. There is also career's support groups that are available that help yourself or staff bereavement charities or if this doesn't help you can get specialist support from your

Effects of Technology on Sony Corporation Inc Introduction Business environments are dynamic; they keep changing, new systems and methods of doing businesses are being implemented and shaped by external environment. Five major forces that affect business environment are political, technological, environmental, economic, cultural and social changes; a single business has no influence on the above external factors; the best it can do is devise strategies to take advantage offered by the situation as it mitigates against any threat brought about by the external environment.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Effects of Technology on Sony Corporation Inc specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Sony Corporation is the fifth largest media conglomerate with its headquarters at Minato, Japan; the company produces a range of electronic commodities like phones, radio, and television. It concentrates in consumer and professional markets oriented commodities, to remain competitive i n the fast developing electronic industry; the company has embarked on massive innovation and invention of products and processes (Hopper, 2007). One major external factor affecting Sony is the fast growth in technology. It is offering the company some competitive advantage and at the same time keeping, the company alert to tap any opportunity offered however, it has increased competition in the industry a notch higher (Sony Corporation Inc, 2011). This paper looks into the effects that technological changes have on Sony; it will focus on the effect it has on its innovativeness. Brief history of Sony The initial idea to have an international electronic company has its roots in 1945, when started a radio repair shop; Akio Morita later joined him. In the efforts to seek knowledge for their young electronic company, Masaru Ibuka visited the United of America where he convince Bell Labs to sell their invention of transistor to his company. This was the start of innovation in the company when the company decided they could use the transistor in the communication industry. In 1955, the company made Japanese first transistor radio, Sonyà TR-55, which was sold commercially. The company adopted the name Sony in 1958. Since the adoption the companyââ¬â¢s name, it has continued to grow in size and sales: it form one of the World Top 20 Semiconductor Sales Leaders. Automation of processes is a crucial factor in businesses since they create an efficient way of doing business: the following are the areas that Sony has been affected by technological development: Technology as a platform of innovation In modern competitive business world, small, medium and large-scale businesses need to develop new processes, products, strategies and paradigms so as they can remain afloat and have a competitive advantage. Innovation is defined as a continuous process of selecting, developing and commercialisation new commodities, processes, approaches and business models. In Sony, the company being in the electronic industry, it develops in-house developments, inventions and innovations; these are facilitated by computer systems and software is used to simulate certain results for decision making; for example when producing Television , the company uses different technologies to produce goods priced differently. The innovation is increasingly required to include more features in the gadgets. Some of the major break through that the company has attained though the use of computer generated products is Universal Media Disc, developed in 2003, HDV with JVC, which was invented in 2004, and Blu-ray Discà withà Panasonicà in 2006. When coming up with these products the company ensures that it consults available resources and levels of technology existing in the world (Haberbeg and Rieple, 2001). Internal process automation The company has embarked on the use of technology to automate its internal process; some of the areas involved are the use of integrated supply chain management, this is a system where different sectors of the company are integrated to assist in the management of stocks and inventories. In the process of supp lies management, the company has innovated a system that is applicable and responsive to its needs; the system has been fine-tuned by internal and external sources that it ensures that the company has a constant supply of goods and materials when they need them (Mark andà Ian, 2002). The second internal area that the company has adopted technology is in the internal auditing team management; internal management consists of a team of experts that monitor and control internal processes to ensure they are compliant with the set standards.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Effects of Technology on Sony Corporation Inc specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The department uses computers and software to monitor the level of compliance in the firm. When products have been developed, the company uses technology to test for level of quality and ensure that it meets the set standards before they find their way to the market (Hislo p, 2005). With technology, the company has been able to develop appropriate communication strategy is involved in ensuring that the right technology in terms of infrastructure and software has been adopted in the organization. The companyââ¬â¢s information system benefits the company in the following ways. 1. Sharing of information in the company between different departments and employees 2. Facilitated communication both internal and external communication 3. Develop an online marketing and advertising mechanisms, which will work to the benefit of the company. 4. Improve efficiency in the businesses and ensure that customerââ¬â¢s needs are satisfied at any one point. 5. To ensure that areas of inefficiency in the business are detected and business re-engineering mechanisms adopted (Colllier ,2008)Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Technology has offered a number of ways to store, analyse, interpolate and report of an industries statistics/information; this has facilitated sound and responsive decision-making. In the recent past, technology has increasingly been adopted in organizations. It assists in developing efficiency and thus customer satisfaction. The competitiveness of a business is vested on the quality of its management decisions. A number of systems that aim at meeting a certain objective in the business arena have been developed. They are either homemade or all user systems (commercial systems). Business intelligence is the name used to refer to the total collection of such system; it was first coined in September 1996, in Gartner Group report. Sony has an elaborate and effective business intelligence system that offers the company sound information necessary for making decisions when they are needed. With the system that is reinforced by a knowledgeable team, the company has used it to come up with new products, improve processes and increase efficiency (Bessant and Tidd, 2007) The effects on Marketing and sales strategies Although Sony is in the industry were its products are used in technology development, the company has adopted other companies products to sell its products, the company has an automated marketing and selling strategy where it uses computers and the internet to advertise its products. The company has developed a website where it posts different information meant for consumer consumption so as consumers can get to learn of new products in the market form the company. The move to online advertising has been facilitated by the expansion of internet services in the world. Online marketing is a cheap and effective method of reaching customers spread in different parts of the globe. When a custo mer places an order, then the company undertakes the role of transporting the commodity to the most favourable place for the customer (Paley, 1999). Online marketing gives an interactive environment that the target customer can be able to communicate to Sony management team via the website and offer their views on the companyââ¬â¢s products. This facilitates development and products differentiation. This gives the user the advantage of airing his or her views; this was never possible in the old marketing and advertising models. The population that is there in the world today, a majority is enlightened and knows its rights. In the exercise of these rights, the people need the environment that does not dictate on what they are supposed to do, the way the traditional marketing and advertisement seemed to do. The two-way system of communication is assisting in building a strong brand name and relationship marketing sees the (appendix for a summarised effect of technology). When a com pany product has a good brand name, it is to the advantage of the company since the brand becomes self-advertising (Fred, 2008). Appropriate and up to date information technology tools should be used in the entire organization. Hardware and software tools should be developed which are appropriate for the attainment of set goals and objectives. Technology and improved Customer service Technology has assisted Sony to develop better customer service; mechanisms to get feedback and respond to customer issues are developed and facilitated by computer systems. This may take the form of call centre or other feedback mechanisms. This acts as another source of information to Sony for future improvements and current gauging in the electronic market. Existing customers are a pool of assets to a company and they can give information relevant to the improvement of various processes. Marketing and selling strategies are addressed and skewed toward a customer-based approach (Fred, 2008). When info rmation is received, then the company embarks on aligning its processes to the needs of the customers. New developments have been triggered by the response of customers; they include Sony laptops, I phones and IPods which are the latest Sony products. To come up with products, there is need to simulate the situation and look for the best combinations, Sony has used computer system to create better combination. Sony is in the electronic industry that is affected directly by the advancement of computers; it gets its market from the sector of the economy, thus the more technology develops the better for the company. In other words, it can be said that technology is the product for the company thus the more improved it is the better to the company. The more it develops products the higher it is likely to enjoy a large market. How the company has reacted to the changes in technology Sony has recognized that the changes in technology have come to the benefit of the industry: the company b eing in the electronic industry has no option other than embrace changes in technology. The management understands the danger of being technology backward; it will mean that the company will lose its competitiveness. To avoid any chances of negative impact of technology, the company has developed a research and development team to pioneer on technology invention, development and innovation; the department, which works under the information and technology department, interacts with the outside world and gauges the position the company, is holding so as it can advise the company effectively. To embrace and appreciate changes, the management has invested largely on developing a freelance culture were employees are encouraged to give their views on what they feel can benefit the company technology wise. Strength and weakness of the response of Sony to technology changes The company positive approach to technology has assisted it adopt and develop new systems and modern ways of conductin g business. Technology has offered different opportunities that need to be grabbed as they come. The company has been able to take advantage of such opportunities thus increasing its gains. The strategy has made the company to be a technology developer other than being a consumer. The approach has a weakness that it can divert attention of the company to developing of new products and forget their main core business. On the other hand, it is an expensive method; when a technology has been developed, the company is so fast that it does not wait to have exhausted the benefit of current technology before it adopts another. Recommendation and conclusion Scientific inventions and innovations have resulted to a business environment where technology influences decisions made in a company. The level of technology advancement in a certain country/industry determines the level of technology to be implemented in particular companies existing in the economy. When the right technology has been a dopted, a company gets a competitive advantage; however, there is no single level of technology that can be said to be optimal, a company need to keep developing and innovating other better technologies (Mitlez, 2004). Sony is an international conglomerate company in the fast growing electronics industry, to remain competitive; the company has embarked on massive innovations and inventions of better processes and products in the efforts to become competitive. When developing processes and products, the company uses computer software to generate artificial situations that are afterwards interpolated to offer a background for strategic decisions on innovations. Other than the benefits brought by technology, it has brought competition in the electronic industry a notch higher; companies in the industry are able to reach national and international markets at a lower cost, thus Sony has to compete with a variety of companies in the industry located in Japan and elsewhere in the globe for local and international market. Export and Import Malaysia Essays
Export and Import Malaysia Essays Export and Import Malaysia Essay Export and Import Malaysia Essay Oct export growth seen slower Date: 09-12-2011 Author: Rupa Damodaran KUALA LUMPUR: MALAYSIAN exports, which have remained on a steady growth path despite a slowing global demand, is likely to grow at a slow pace in October, said economists. Base effect is one of the reasons for the pace but economists were however cheered by the support by commodity prices, which would be a boost to the total export receipts. According to a Business Times poll, exports are expected to post a 8. 07 per cent average growth rate and imports 5. 19 per cent while trade balance is expected to average RM8. 97 billion. The International Trade and Industry Ministry will release the data today. OCBC Banks Gundy Cahyadi said the 16. 6 per growth, seen in September, was just temporary, adding that the slowdown in global growth momentum is likely to weigh on the export growth prospects. Some moderation is already seen in the commodity shipments in the recent months. According to Citi, the electrical and electronics (E;E) sector, which contributes the bulk of manufacturing exports from Malaysia, could continue to stabilise, in line with some regional peers. The 20. 8 per cent year-on-year surge in Japans imports from Malaysia in ringgit terms and the 12. per cent surge in Singapores imports from Malaysia are likely to offset the moderation in Chinas imports from Malaysia (13. 7 per cent) in October. However, Citi is convinced that palm oil exports will surge as the Palm Oil Registration and Licensing Authoritys October data showed the combined value of palm oil and palm kernel oil exports nearly doubled to 46. 7 per cent year-on-year. Standard Chartered Bank also expects commodities to continue to do much of the heavy lifting in terms of driving export growth as manufactured goods exports remain sluggish. Economist Tai Hui expects the positive commodity price effect to fade towards year-end. Crude palm oil (CPO) prices fell 9. 6 per cent year-on-year in November, compared with a 40 per cent gain in the fourth quarter of 2010. Despite our forecast for CPO to rise modestly from current levels in the next 12 months, this will not be strong enough to lift exports significantly. According to Tai, resilient domestic demand should continue to support import growth. ( END ) Source : Business Times SUMARRY Based on the article, we know that the October Export was growth slower. Organizational theory and design Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Organizational theory and design - Assignment Example In addition, todayââ¬â¢s planning enhances quicker decision making than planning twenty five years ago (Amagoh, 2008). In the modern world where everything changes quickly and crises are a regular part of organizational life, I think the importance for planning is increasing. The dynamic of todayââ¬â¢s organizational life and the high risk of crises need planning that has the capacity to implement and modify strategies quickly in order to mitigate undesirable outcomes. In the past, organizations could draw ten years strategic plans but in the highly dynamic and crises-prone organizational life, organizations need planning that will guides their practices on a daily basis. Survival in contemporary organizational life is largely dependent on how effectively an organization adopts planning that helps evaluate and monitor performance and predicts likely occurrences (Miroux, 2008). Changing an organizationââ¬â¢s domain is feasible strategy for coping with a threatening environment. The feasibility of changing an organizationââ¬â¢s domain is embedded in the things it enables businesses to do. It helps companies to move to a domain that has little competition and avoid unfriendly government regulation. Changing an organizationââ¬â¢s domain helps the organization to move to better customers and suppliers. That notwithstanding, the feasibility of this strategy depends on an organizationââ¬â¢s preparedness to adjust to the new domain and to counter unlikely outcomes. Google is an example of a company that changed its domain when it went into advertising. In 2008, the initiative paid off when Google announced that it had made twenty one billion dollars from advertising. Googleââ¬â¢s experience is proof of the feasibility of changing a businessââ¬â¢ domain as a strategy for coping with a threatening environment (Sherif, 2006). The learning organization is made up of five elements namely structure, task, systems,
Global reasons for water shortages Research Paper
Global reasons for water shortages - Research Paper Example These reasons in conjunction with uncontrolled population have led to straining of the available water sources limiting access to the resource. Generally, water scarcity is caused by the growing demand for fresh water and depletion of the already strained water sources as people clear and settles on land near water catchment areas (Chellaney, 2013). In essence, such scarcities arise out of two mechanisms; absolute insufficiency and economic inadequacy. Physical insufficiency is attributed to insufficient natural sources of water as demanded by the dependent population. On the other hand, economic water shortages entail unsustainable management of the scarce water resources. This is the major cause of water shortage in developing countries. As earlier mentioned, climate change being one of the major reasons for water shortage in the world contribute to waning glaciers, condensed steam and shrinking lakes (Miller & Spoolman, 2009). There is an increasing need for global leaders to control global warming, pollution and environmental conservation if the problem of water scarcity is to be fully

Estuary Project Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Estuary Project - Essay Example The first step is to engage measures that aim to reduce, completely, the pollution to which the estuary is prone. This entails the employment of toxic reduction programs, which have the long time goals of reducing the load of toxic pollutants. Other additional measures include engaging in economic incentives that discourage the use of toxic raw materials and subsequently the production of harmful waste products. People and industries should be made accountable to their waste disposal mechanisms lest they wilfully engage in polluting the estuary, which are environmental audits. Environmentally friendly agricultural practises should be encouraged and advertised for those who are ignorant. These agricultural practises might need to include the creation of means via which pesticides will not penetrate the estuary. A disturbing fact is that new commercial products are being created and sold in the market daily. Some of these new products will be a source of pollution. Thus, pollution prev ention will not be complete if this avenue is not analysed. In this regard, stewardship programs should be employed that seek to guide on the reduction of pollution attributed to new commercial products in the market. ... Additionally, the accumulation of mercury and selenium should be controlled in respect to the source and sinks. A major concern, in pollution control, will be to manage the amount of run off arising from public and private establishments. Appropriate measures have been put in place to check on this, it varies from the implementation of ordinance and education the general public on the appropriate ways of managing run-offs. Additionally, measures have been proposed to curb and control the amount of pollution arising from energy and transportation systems. In the context of controlling pollution, the role played by mines and agricultural toxic waste has also been analyzed. Various avenues have been proposed in reaching this goal (Gordon Becker, 2011). When all this is done, it is of fundamental importance to check on the significance of pollution on the life of wildlife and the human population. This entails the cleaning up of pollutants of the aquatic species in the estuary. Additiona lly, the source of food for these species should be checked. Subsequently, the deposits or hot spots of the sediments be it mercury or selenium should be controlled if not completely eradicated. All these measures mentioned above are being employed in the endeavour of finally making the water quality better and conducive for life. An additional objective is to improve the water quality via the restoration and improvement of the tidal wetland functions. Subsequently, the riparian and floodplain actions in the wetland will also be improved. Aside from the aspect of pollution, biotic and abiotic factors impede on the productivity and diversity of life present and dependent on the estuary. The abiotic factors that affect the estuary consist of the amount of sunshine that is
Clean Water in the Environmental Policy Context Essay
Clean Water in the Environmental Policy Context - Essay Example Secondly, the maintenance of a pollution-free waterbody requires several technological and monitoring arrangements which can come at a high cost. Thirdly, water is an essential and abundant resource. People believe that they have the right to clean water. This therefore means that authorities need to ensure that waterbodies are clean and free of pollution. Additionally, the flora and fauna related to the ecosystems of rivers and other waterbodies have the right to be preserved. These three factors imply that federal and state governments have a primary obligation to ensure that water is free from pollution. The inherent nature of clean water issues means that government can only handle the issue of providing safe water through policy. This paper examines the challenges facing policymakers in providing clean water to the public. To this end, the focus will be on the Clean Water Act, 1977 which provides the basic policy framework to tackle this issue through pollution control programs and limitation of discharge into waterbodies (Summary of Clean Water Act, 2011). The research examines perspectives into the challenges facing this Act and comes up with recommendations on how to deal with these challenges. The paper undertakes a critical view of the recommendations and examines how it can be applied in reality. Clean Water Act 1977 The Clean Water Act was enacted ââ¬Å"... to restore and maintain the chemical, physical and biological integrity of the nation's watersâ⬠(Section 101 a). This means that it provides a framework to ensure that practical steps are taken to prevent the pollution of our waterbodies. The Act empowers the US Environmental Protection Agency, US Army Corps of Engineers and the States to take reasonable steps to prevent the pollution of surface water in the country (National Research Council, 2008 p65). These parties work together with the other law enforcement agencies to ensure that all limits the law is followed appropriately in local jurisdictions. The Act was ammended in 1981, 1987 and 1990 (National Research Council, 2008 p265). The Act has six different Titles. Title I is about research and related programs. It sets out the goals of the act and the preamble it follows. Title II is about Grants for the Construction of Treatment Works. It shows how the various municipalities will be assisted to expand sewerage treatment plants. Title III is about Standards & Enforcement. It borders on discharge points, technology quality standards, water quality programs as well as criminal and civil provision for the enforcement of the law. Title IV outlines the federal and state certification and the issuance of permits and licenses needed for various potential polluters. Title V is about the facts that citizens can sue polluters and the procedures they can follow for that. It also describes the protections offered to whistleblowers. Title VI is about funding for State and local water pollution control systems. Policy Challen ges of the Clean Water Act There are three main significant challenges that can be identified in relation to the Clean Water Act. First of all, there is a major problem in relation to the uniformity of the application of the Act. Secondly, there is limited funding for treatment services as well as monitoring services to ensure that the Act is fully controlled and kept in motion. Thirdly, due to the apathy in the society and the existence of

Design - Assignment Example Skill-based pay will be introduced in organizations that pay remarkably high wages, provide remarkably high levels of teaching, and make far-reaching use of employee participation practices. These are self-managed groups, open sharing of corporate information pegged with various pay inventions. To design and implement the skill-based pay system, the business ought to first outline the work to be completed, and how it ought to be assigned between individuals and teams. Training must be established that is closely related to the blocks of skill satisfied in the pay system. Activities In a skill-based pay approach, instead of the essential building block of the human-resource management exist as the job, the rudimentary building core block ought to be the individual. The design mission in the organization needs to develop a classical example of what expertise each individual in the organization necessitates. The skill combination is identified in regard to each individual needs. This wi ll enhance to reflect the core capabilities of the organization and the way the business wishes to function from a management style point of understanding. The human-resource subsystems (such as the teaching systems, assortment system, the pay system, the evaluation system and the career progress systems) need to be allied with the development of individuals. This will aid the organization to end up with an accurate skill profile for each individual worker (Piskurich, 2003). A work design is possibly the most fundamental inference that aid in the undertaking of a skill-based tactic to management concerns in relation to area of work design. Personal descriptions ought to be established in relation to comprehensive job descriptions. These personal descriptions have to specify the skills that an individual requires to be effective in their specific work area. It is worth noting that the skill-based approach is most operational in work situations where knowledge work is used. Furthermor e, it is also relevant where individuals can add considerable worth to the product or service. This is because when individuals are self-managing, its efficiency is enhanced. Content As stated earlier, skill-based pay emphasizes on skills and pays individuals in relation to the skills they have. Blocks of skills desirable by the organization, except the job, characterize the basic units of study. In modest skill-based systems, employees may be remunerated for learning what, in principle, multiple jobs are. As a result, skill blocks in skill-based pay systems become equivalent to jobs in job-evaluation systems. Skill assessment, appraisal, authorization, pay rates, and teaching ought to be closely tied to skill blocks. This will allow these systems to work successfully and ensures the organization is being paid value for its investment in salaries, training, and other capitals (Pfeiffer and Ballew, 1998). Testing Methods The principle pay for performance production in any skill-based system relies on how well employees use their skills during a quantified time period. It comprises looking at what individuals add to the performance of their group. Where this is quantifiable, it may make logic to tie part of a personââ¬â¢s benefit to their individual input of their team. It is worth mentioning that the substitute to individual pay for a performance is not to quantify individual performance and to ground pay on organization business unit performance.

Two short essays - Assignment Example As technologies progress and science-based approaches in finding evidences prior to decision making increase, some women experiencing monthly menstrual cycle are holding on to the hope of becoming finally free from the discomforts linked to menstruation. At last, it was found that menstruation can be controlled, and just like how the principle of taking a pregnancy pill works, women can also suppress the natural menstrual blood flow each month. However, there are prevailing concerns on this; especially on the issue of how ââ¬Å"naturalâ⬠is this approach prior to finally seeing women taking it into great account (Thomas & Ellertson, 2000, p.923). Concerning this, the Society for Menstrual Cycle Research (2007) argued that menstruation is not a disease; hence, it should not be suppressed to flow naturally in the womanââ¬â¢s healthy life. The medicalization of the menstrual cycle is both beneficial and might be destructive at some point. It is beneficial when the act itself is done in order to correct a defective menstrual cycle. However, if its primary aim is to suppress the natural menstrual cycle of a woman, then it is another story. The impact of medicalization of menstrual cycle on womenââ¬â¢s sense of well-being is a great point to consider. In the first place, it is natural for a woman to undergo a menstrual cycle each month. This is significantly true to almost all healthy with mature reproductive potential women or girls around the world. Suppressing it therefore does not make sense. Estrogen and progesterone hormones are essential actors for this phenomenon to take place. However, these hormones are also important for the proper functioning of a womenââ¬â¢s physical body. In fact, the lack of these hormones leads to some women on their menopausal stage to experience various discomforts, physical, emotional and psychological (Love, 2000; Society for Menstrual Cycle Research, 2007). Women are different from men.

Is the Philippines Truly Free
Is the Philippines Truly Free Essay In terms of fashion, culture and economy, however, we cannot say the same. The Filipinos still suffer from colonial mentality. Music, fashion, customs and tradition and products of foreign countries, especially the so-called stateside, are still being patronized by most Filipinos, especially the youth who unabashedly mimic foreign singers, artists, including their lifestyles not minding to spend lots of money just to be ââ¬Å"inâ⬠with these foreign idols. Thousands of Pinoys are also dying to migrate to other countries. As a member of the Filipino youth of today I believe that I can somehow make the Philippines truly free by reversing the above negative attitudes. First, I will start from myself. I will think, talk and act like a true Filipino. I will live by the Filipino values like being polite and courteous, using ââ¬Å"poâ⬠, ââ¬Å"opoâ⬠, respect my parents, the elders and be fair to all. I will patronize Filipino made products so we can save the dollars of our country. I will visit and encourage visit to the local tourist spots. I shall lead by example by taking care of the environment. I will recycle plastics and use biodegradable trash as organic fertilizer. By doing so, we can boost our countryââ¬â¢s economy and awaken the sense of nationalism in each and every Filipino. Not only will our country be appreciated by our fellow Filipinos, but also by foreigners locally and internationally. Lastly, I will keep myself informed of the current social and national issues so I can express my views thereon. I will encourage the youth to do the same so we can preserve the democracy in our country alive and help it move forward.

How to teach :: Employment, Education, Staffing
Tenure is a topic that has produced much heated discussion in recent years. Some argue that tenure is an outmoded conce and, if institutions are going to remain competitive, they need to be able to have more flexibility to hire and fire faculty as student needs change. Others argue that tenure is vital to the protection of academic freedom and that without tenure we will return to the days when faculty were dismissed for teaching unpopular opinions. Several state legislatures have mandated post-tenure review for faculty, i.e. Texas, Florida, Tennessee, and Arkansas. New campuses have been created in Florida and California that do not have faculty tenure. In addition, to the arguments about tenure, institutions have not been filling tenure-track positions as faculty retire or resign to take another position. Instead we are seeing an increase in the numbers of faculty hired on limited term contracts of five years or less and an increase in the numbers of part-time temporary faculty hired. Several state legislatures have mandated post-tenure review for faculty, i.e. Texas, Florida, Tennessee, and Arkansas. New campuses have been created in Florida and California that do not have faculty tenure.

The Lost Identitiy of Othello Essay -- GCSE Coursework Shakespeare Oth
The Lost Identitiy of Othelloà à Othello's identity in the Venetian society is his role as "the Moor". Few people use his real name when talking about him. When speaking the given quote, Othello is telling the Venetians how he won Desdemona's heart by telling her the story of his life, and he now retells it to the Venetians. This tale-telling is a way of employing the linguistic system to reshape for himself a new identity with more positive connotations than "the Moor" can offer. "The Moor" is an expression the Venetians connect to other expressions in the linguistic system which all have a negative value. Examples are such expressions as "old black ram... The above excerpt is provided as reference only.à The complete essay begins below. When considering the identity of Othello, in Shakespeare's play Othello, it is beneficial to ponder the quote "I am not what I am.". Perhaps Othello finds his identity threatened by Desdemona's reaction to his tales. In order to understand this better, it is useful to note a quote from Pam Morris: Literature and Feminism, (Blackwell, 1993) where she discusses the resolution of the Oedipal crisis. For Freud the outcome of the child's fear of castration is its submission to the reality principle and hence its entry into the social order. For Lacan this must coincide with the child's entry into the language system.....Language is thus the Law of the father; a linguistic system within which our social and gender identity is always already structured. (p. 104) Othello's identity in the Venetian society is his role as "the Moor". Few people use his real name when talking about him. When speaking the given quote, Othello is telling the Venetians how he won Desdemona's heart by tel... ... in himself he found it impossible that anybody else should do so. This insecurity proves his undoing. His positive self-image gone, he is left a choice between "the Moor" or nothingness. The moment Emilia realizes Othello is the murderer she reverts to calling him expressions connected to the negative image of "the Moor": "And you the blacker devil!...thou art a devil." (V, ii, 129, 131) He can't stand being this person, the only one society and the symbolic order can offer him. To construct his own identity has proven impossible. To be without an identity, a non-personn implies death. He chooses to free himself of this unwanted identity by stepping out of the social order and the language system by means of suicide. The Most Intelligence Person I Know
My friend Alejandra is the most intelligent person I know. Griselda Vasquez English 115 Professor Stagnaro 10/3/2012 What is intelligence? According to David Wechsel, ââ¬Å"Intelligence is the aggregate or global capacity of the individual to act purposefully, to think rationally and to deal effectively with his environmentâ⬠. Human intelligence is the capacity that a human has to adapt successfully to the world. I define Intelligence as the ability of humans to achieve objectives in life. The most intelligent person I know is my best girlfriend Alejandra because she is so creative; she is a good problem solver, and she is responsible. My best friend Alejandra is so creative in the way that she always has something new to show to other people. She does original and unexpected things, though sometimes she expresses in them an uncommon way. She always surprises me in different ways; for example, my last birthday, she organized a big theme party for me. Ale made all guests dress in red and she made beautiful decorations for the tables; she decorates a dry branch with necklaces and rhinestones hung on it.My friend also did cute cupcakes and cookies with the shape of the peace and love symbol. Ale has a lot of imagination and she is able to create things that some people cannot imagine; for example, my friend can do beautiful things with just a paper or other recycled material that have on her hands. She makes all kinds of flowers of any size with crepe paper. Furthermore, she can make bags, belts and bracelets with bottle caps, plastic or cans. Alejandra has the ability to take advantage of any situation or thing that she develops. She always relates her ideas to something that can have a benefit in her life; an example is when she wants something and for some reason does not have enough money to buy it, she uses her creativity and makes key chains or bracelets to sell and thus get money to achieve her goal of having that thing. Besides doing everything in deta il until bring it to be perfect or near perfect. Her creativity is amazing. My friend Alejandra has a great ability to solve problems. She has the capacity to solve math and life problems.Ale never sees the problems as something unacceptable in her life; on the contrary, she sees problems as a normal part of life. She always says that if in life there are no obstacles or problems, then itââ¬â¢s not life. She thinks that problems always can be solved and none is too big to not be resolved. She always looks at the way that her problems are solved, learns from them, and improves the idea. She is a good problem solver because she needs to work and study at same time, she doesnââ¬â¢t have the support of her parents and in spite for that, she knows how to get ahead and pay her rent, school, phone bill, and everything she needs to survive. Also, she helps other people solve their problems by giving advice and support. When I have a problem, she always gives me her support and helps me to feel better. Moreover Alejandra has the capacity to solve math problems quickly. A good example of this is when we were in high school she never cared about studying for math tests, she was always the first to finish the exams, and she also was the one who always had the best score on test of the whole group. She is so smart in this area for that she is going to graduate with honors in accounting. My friend is the most responsible person I know, both into thoughts and actions. She is very responsible when it comes work and school. She always does her work on time and puts all her effort in, no matter whether she likes or does not like it. Ale always arrives on time to every class, appointment, or job she has; for example when she had the interview for her current job. She arrived fifteen minutes before her appointment time. My friend is a responsible person when making decisions and accepts the consequences of her actions. When she does something wrong and she knows it, she is aw are of her actions and assumes the consequences of it even if it costs some work. Last year she had to make a hard decision in her life. She had to decide between staying in Tijuana or move to San Luis Potosi with her parents. She decided stay in Tijuana and take the responsibility to charge her life by herself without any help. Also, she was responsible when she had to take care of her siblings. Before her parents left Tijuana, they had seafood restaurants and her responsibility was to take care of her family business. She goes in it on time and does her best. She learns what she doesn't already know to benefit the business, and other employees, and customers. She leaves when her work is done, not sneaking out early or slang off and leaving work for others to do.She picks up after herself at home, pays her bills on time, she doesn't go into debt, she doesn't make promises she can't keep, and she doesn't stand people up when she promises to be there. She keeps her word to others and to herself. She reaches out a helping hand and asks for help when she needs it. She takes care of her health. These qualities have my friend as being creative, solving problems easily, and being responsible causes and she is the smartest person I know because she knows how to lead her life to success and achieve all her goals successfully.

Summary of Rizal
Republic Act No. 1425, known as theà Rizal Law, mandates all educational institutions in theà Philippinesà to offer courses aboutà Jose Rizal. The full name of the law isà An Act to Include in the Curricula of All Public and Private Schools, Colleges and Universities Courses On the Life, Works and Writings ofà Jose Rizal, Particularly His Novelsà Noli Me Tangereà andà El Filibusterismo, Authorizing the Printing and Distribution Thereof, and for Other Purposes. The measure was strongly opposed by the Roman Catholic Church in the Philippines due to the anti-clerical themes inà Noli Me Tangereà andEl Filibusterismo. Senatorà Claro M. Rectoà was the main proponent of the then Rizal Bill. He sought to sponsor the bill at Congress. However, this was met with stiff opposition from the Catholic Church. During theà 1955 Senate election, the church charged Recto with being a communist and an anti-Catholic.After Recto's election, the Church continued to oppose the bil l mandating the reading of Rizal's novelsà Noli Me Tangereà andà El Filibusterismo, claiming it would violateà freedom of conscienceà andà religion. [1] In the campaign to oppose the Rizal bill, the Catholic Church urged its adherents to write to their congressmen and senators showing their opposition to the bill; later, it organized symposiums. In one of these symposiums, Fr. Jesus Cavanna argued that the novels belonged to the past and that teaching them would misrepresent current conditions.Radio commentator Jesus Paredes also said that Catholics had the right to refuse to read them as it would ââ¬Å"endanger their salvationâ⬠. [1] Groups such as Catholic Action of the Philippines, theà Congregation of the Mission, theà Knights of Columbus, and the Catholic Teachers Guild organized opposition to the bill; they were countered by Veteranos de la Revolucion (Spirit of 1896), Alagad in Rizal, the Freemasons, and theà Knights of Rizal. The Senate Committee on E ducation sponsored a bill co-written by bothà Jose P.Laurelà and Recto, with the only opposition coming fromà Francisco Soc Rodrigo,à Mariano Jesus Cuenco, andà Decoroso Rosales. [2] Theà Archbishop of Manila,à Rufino Santos, protested in aà pastoral letterà that Catholic students would be affected if compulsory reading of the unexpurgated version were pushed through. [3]à Arsenio Lacson, Manila's mayor, who supported the bill, walked out of Mass when the priest read a circular from the archbishop denouncing the bill. [4] Rizal, according toà Cuenco, ââ¬Å"attack[ed] dogmas, beliefs and practices of the Church. The assertion that Rizal limited himself to castigating undeserving priests and refrained from criticizing, ridiculing or putting in doubt dogmas of the Catholic Church, is absolutely gratuitous and misleading. â⬠Cuenco touched on Rizal's denial of the existence ofà purgatory, as it was not found in the Bible, and that Moses and Jesus Christ did not mention its existence; Cuenco concluded that a ââ¬Å"majority of the Members of this Chamber, if not all [including] our good friend, the gentleman from Suluâ⬠believed in purgatory. 5]à The senator from Sulu, Domocao Alonto, attacked Filipinos who proclaimed Rizal as ââ¬Å"their national hero but seemed to despise what he had writtenâ⬠, saying that theIndonesiansà used Rizal's books as their Bible on their independence movement;à Pedro Lopez, who hails from Cebu, Cuenco's province, in his support for the bill, reasoned out that it was in their province the independence movement started, whenà Lapu-Lapuà foughtà Ferdinand Magellan. [3] Outside the Senate, the Catholic schools threatened to close down if the bill was passed; Recto countered that if that happened, the schools would be nationalized.Recto did not believe the threat, stating that the schools were too profitable to be closed. [1]à The schools gave up the threat, but threatened to ââ¬Å"punis hâ⬠legislators in favor of the law in future elections. A compromise was suggested, to use the expurgated version; Recto, who had supported the required reading of the unexpurgated version, declared: ââ¬Å"The people who would eliminate the books of Rizal from the schools would blot out from our minds the memory of the national hero. This is not a fight against Recto but a fight against Rizal,â⬠adding that since Rizal is dead, they are attempting to suppress his memory. 6] On May 12, 1956, a compromise inserted by Committee on Education chairman Laurel that accommodated the objections of the Catholic Church was approved unanimously. The bill specified that only college (university) students would have the option of reading unexpurgated versions of clerically-contested reading material, such asà Noli Me Tangereà andà El Filibusterismo. [1][3][6]à The bill was enacted on June 12, 1956,[3]à Flag Day. ââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬â ââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬â- [edit]Content | | | Theà Nolià andà Filià were required readings for college students. Section 1 mandated that the students were to read the novels as they were written inà Spanish, although a provision ordered that the Board of National Education create rules on how these should be applied. [5]à The last two sections were focused on making Rizal's works accessible to the general public: the second section mandated the schools to have ââ¬Å"an adequate numberâ⬠of copies in their libraries, while the third ordered the board to publish the works in majorà Philippine languages. [5] ââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬â- edit]Aftermath After the bill was enacted into law, there were no recorded instances of students applying for exemption from reading the novels, and no known procedure for such exemptions. [6]à In 1994, Presidentà Fidel V. Ramosà ordered theà Department of Education, Culture and Sportsà to fully implement the law as there had been reports that it has still not been fully implemented. [7] The debate during the enactment of the Rizal Law has been compared to theà Reproductive Health billà (RH bill) debate of 2011. 8]à Akbayanà representativeKaka Bag-ao, one of the proponents of the RH bill, said, quoting the Catholic hierarchy, that ââ¬Å"More than 50 years ago, they said the Rizal Law violates the Catholic's right to conscience and religion, interestingly, the same line of reasoning they use to oppose the RH bill. ââ¬Å"[9] ââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬â- [edit]References 1. ^à aà bà cà dà Abinales, Patricio N. ; Amoroso, Donna J. MONTEMAYOR| | JOSE RIZAL, the national hero of the Philippines and pride of the Malayan race, was born on June 19, 1861, in the town of Calamba, Laguna. He was the seventh child in a family of 11 children (2 boys and 9 girls). Both his parents were educated and belonged to distinguished families. His father, Francisco Mercado Rizal, an industrious farmer whom Rizal called ââ¬Å"a model of fathers,â⬠came from Binan, Laguna; while his mother, Teodora Alonzo y Quintos, a highly cultured and accomplished woman whom Rizal called ââ¬Å"loving and prudent mother,â⬠was born in Meisic, Sta. Cruz, Manila. At the age of 3, he learned the alphabet from his mother; at 5, while learning to read and write, he already showed inclinations to be an artist. He astounded his family and relatives by his pencil drawings and sketches and by his moldings of clay . At the age 8, he wrote a Tagalog poem, ââ¬Å"Sa Aking Mga Kabata,â⬠the theme of which revolves on the love of oneââ¬â¢s language. In 1877, at the age of 16, he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree with an average of ââ¬Å"excellentâ⬠from the Ateneo Municipal de Manila. In the same year, he enrolled in Philosophy and Letters at the University of Santo Tomas, while at the same time took courses leading to the degree of surveyor and expert assessor at the Ateneo. He finished the latter course on March 21, 1877 and passed the Surveyorââ¬â¢s examination on May 21, 1878; but because of his age, 17, he was not granted license to practice the profession until December 30, 1881. In 1878, he enrolled in medicine at the University of Santo Tomas but had to stop in his studies when he felt that the Filipino students were being discriminated upon by their Dominican tutors. On May 3, 1882, he sailed for Spain where he continued his studies at the Universidad Central de Madrid .On June 21, 1884, at the age of 23, he was conferred the degree of Licentiate in Medicine and on June 19,1885, at the age of 24, he finished his course in Philosophy and Letters with a grade of ââ¬Å"excellent. â⬠à Having traveled extensively in Europe, America and Asia, he mastered 22 languages. These include Arabic, Catalan, Chinese, English, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Malayan, Portuguese, Russian, Sanskrit, Spanish, Tagalog, and other native dialects.A versatile genius, he was an architect, artists, businessman, cartoonist, educator, economist, ethnologist, scientific farmer, historian, inventor, journalist, linguist, musician, mythologist, nationalist, naturalist, novelist, opthalmic surgeon, poet, propagandist, psychologist, scientist, sculptor, sociologist, and theologian. He was an expert swordsman and a good shot. In the hope of securing political and social reforms for his country and at the same time educate his countrymen, Rizal, the greatest apostle of Filipino nationalism, published, while in Europe, several works with highly nationalistic and revolutionary tendencies. In March 1887, his daring book, NOLI ME TANGERE, a satirical novel exposing the arrogance and despotism of the Spanish clergy, was published in Berlin; in 1890 he reprinted in Paris, Morgaââ¬â¢s SUCCESSOS DE LAS ISLAS FILIPINAS with his annotations to prove that the Filipinos had a civilization worthy to be proud of even long before the Spaniards set foot on Philippine soil; on September 18, 1891, EL FILIBUSTERISMO, his second novel and a sequel to the NOLI and more revolutionary and tragic than the latter, was printed in Ghent.Because of his fearless exposures of the injustices committed by the civil and clerical officials, Rizal provoked the animosity of those in power. This led himself, his relatives and countrymen into trouble with the Spanish officials of the country. As a consequence, he and those who had contacts with him, were shadowe d; the authorities were not only finding faults but even fabricating charges to pin him down. Thus, he was imprisoned in Fort Santiago from July 6, 1892 to July 15, 1892 on a charge that anti-friar pamphlets were found in the luggage of his sister Lucia who arrive with him from Hong Kong. While a political exile in Dapitan, he engaged in agriculture, fishing and business; he maintained and operated a hospital; he conducted classes- taught his pupils the English and Spanish languages, the arts. The sciences, vocational courses including agriculture, surveying, sculpturing, and painting, as well as the art of self defense; he did some researches and collected specimens; he entered into correspondence with renowned men of letters and sciences abroad; and with the help of his pupils, he constructed water dam and a relief map of Mindanao ââ¬â both considered remarkable engineering feats. His sincerity and friendliness won for him the trust and confidence of even those assigned to guard him; his good manners and warm personality were found irresistible by women of all races with whom he had personal contacts; his intelligence and humility gained for him the respect and admiration of prominent men of other nations; while his undaunted courage and determination to uplift the welfare of his people were feared by his enemies. When the Philippine Revolution started on August 26, 1896, his enemies lost no time in pressing him down. They were able to enlist witnesses that linked him with the revolt and these were never allowed to be confronted by him. Thus, from November 3, 1986, to the date of his execution, he was again committed to Fort Santiago. In his prison cell, he wrote an untitled poem, now known as ââ¬Å"Ultimo Adiosâ⬠which is considered a masterpiece and a living document expressing not only the heroââ¬â¢s great love of country but also that of all Filipinos. After a mock trial, he was convicted of rebellion, sedition and of forming illegal association . In the cold morning of December 30, 1896, Rizal, a man whose 35 years of life had been packed with varied activities which proved that the Filipino has capacity to equal if not excel even those who treat him as a slave, was shot at Bagumbayan Field. |
Forensic Psychology Essay
1.How often is the insanity defense used and how successful is it? I would like to answer this question, with the presentation of my opinion and the performed research. It is within my opinion, that the insanity defense is used over excessively and is taking part in almost every defense to any crime. Offenders seem to have the knowledge to the use of this defense and will often provide a plea to guilty by insanity or temporary insanity, within the faith, to receive a reduced sentence. While insanity has to be a proven fact and a psychologist has to conduct a variety of tests to confirm the offender is suffering from a mental incompetence or insanity, most offenders have the ability to mislead or deceive psychologists to receive the evaluation they seek. Such action, if discovered, would actually prove the sanity of such offenders, but in most cases, it cannot be ascertained. The success of such defense is, within my view, very effective. The performed research is revealing a different answer. According to the St. Joseph News Press (2007), it has stated the opposite to my opinion. This article within a study of the national mental health institute claimââ¬â¢s; ââ¬Å"the insanity defense plea is used in less than one (1) percent of criminal cases in the United States and less than a quarter of those pleas are successfulâ⬠. Retrieved from; St. Joseph News Press (2007). With these opinions and views in combination, one would have to conduct further studies on this subject, to establish the correct answer. Everyone has different sentiments, within the use of the insanity defense and the successfulness of such validation. 2. Identify and discuss the major criticisms of the insanity defense. It is my belive, the major criticism of the insanity defense could be the establishment of prove to the claim of insanity. More often, offenders will try to make use of this defense for the hope of receiving a reduced sentence or the sentence to receive institutional care. According to my research, there are three (3) major criticisms within the insanity defense. The Insanity defense is mentioned as confusing to the psychiatric and legal concept. Furthermore, it is explained that the word ââ¬Å"insaneâ⬠is more of a legal word, then a medical term, and therefor to prove a person or a criminal insane, one must find the mental condition, of a criminal, severely impaired to the point of losing oneââ¬â¢s free will. A psychiatrist may be or may not able to determine such illness, and a juryââ¬â¢s decision solely based on a psychiatristsââ¬â¢ opinion may be grounded on unreliable evidence. Retrieved from; Westââ¬â¢s Encyclopedia of American Law, edition 2 (2008). 2. This criticism is on the moral basis and the consequences. This section suggests that the crime is of more importance, then the moral imperatives. It also addresses the way a criminal, who does plea insanity, should be trialed and punished for the crime. It is suggested, that the criminal should be convicted and the mental illness should be taken in consideration at the time of sentencing. If this method would be used by the court, it would allow the judge to determine the length of imprisonment, within a hospital prison, and the defendant would have to provide prove of improvement to the once dangerous behavior. Retrieved from; Westââ¬â¢s Encyclopedia of American Law, edition 2 (2008). 3. This last criticism, is turned to the rich and wealthy criminals, who make use of the insanity plea. It is argued; ââ¬Å"only wealthy defendant have the ability to retain a high-priced psychiatrist, who may be able to declare the defendant insane with the performed examinationâ⬠. It also is believed, people who have less monetary funds and depend on the defense of a public defender, will not receive the same quality of defense, and they are also unable to receive the same value within the insanity exam. Such critic is based on the suggestion, that the insanity defense should be eliminated. Retrieved from; Westââ¬â¢s Encyclopedia of American Law, edition 2 (2008). 3. When a mentally ill person is convicted and incarcerated, what are some of the difficulties in providing appropriate psychological treatment for these offenders? The difficulties in providing appropriate care, to a incarcerated mentally ill person, would stand to the inappropriate care and knowledge of the staff or facility personnel, to the condition of the mentally ill. A prison or jail is not equipped nor can such establishment provide the correct treatment to the mentally ill. To take in consideration the staff and the special medical treatment such person would require, every day, while in such confinement. But the alternative to this problem is stated in: Wrightsmanââ¬â¢s Psychology and the Legal System, 6e,(2011) in which it is proposed; ââ¬Å"When defendants are found incompetent to stand trial, they can be committed for a period of treatment designed to restore their competenceâ⬠. And also; ââ¬Å"for dealing with the unrestorably incompetent criminal defendant include her or his waiving the right to be found incompetent to proceed to trial and using a special form of commitment for incompetent defendants who are judged at a provisional trial to be guilty of the crimes with which they are chargedââ¬Å". Retrieved from; Wrightsmanââ¬â¢s Psychology and the Legal System, 6e, pg; 249 (2011). It is my believe, the above suggested method, would be the better approach to the incarceration of incompetent or the mentally ill offenders.

The evolution and behavior of a primate species Essay
The evolution and behavior of a primate species - Essay Example A key factor to this argument is that primates relied on sight over smell. They were able to develop a keen sense of depth perception, perhaps because of the constant leaping that was necessary to move about the trees. Their initial adaptation to life in trees set the stage for the subsequent appearance of other primate models ("Paleoanthropology/Primates/Humans"). By "arboreal", we refer to the arboreal theory proposed by Le Gros Clark, claiming that primates evolved from their ancestors by adapting to arboreal life. Primates are thought to have developed several of their traits and habits initially while residing in trees. A key factor to this argument is that primates relied on sight over smell. They were able to develop a keen sense of depth perception, perhaps because of the constant leaping that was necessary to move about the trees. The development of the hands and feet in Primates, which made them capable of grasping, was also believed to be a result of arboreal life, which r equired a great deal of crawling along branches, and reaching out for food, usually fruits ("Arboreal theory").Considered as generalist mammals (species that are able to adapt well in a wide variety of environmental conditions and can make the most of a variety of different resources), primates show a wide range of characteristics. Some primates, including humans and baboons, do not live primarily in trees, but all species possess adaptations for climbing trees and the like. The evolution of primates started with the Plesiadapis going back to at least 65 mya. From that time until today, there is a vast difference in the species. In all aspects - behavioral, physical, and cognitive - the primate species have definitely transformed to adapt to its environment. Just as the gist of Charles Darwin's theory on evolution states, it is the survival of the fittest (Darwin). The species, then, transformed because of its need to survive. In the cognitive aspect, the primate's intelligence developed due to reasons that would ensure its survival. Just as apes realized the importance of arboreal locomotion, soon after, some of them have developed the skill in tool-making, and would use them to acquire food and for social displays, especially observed with chimpanzees (Byrne 559). Chimpanzees are also observed to use objects as tools to solve new and novel problems ("Paleoanthropology/Primates/Humans"). By the development of their cognitive element, the physical aspect is too, affected. Primates are particularly large-brained compared to other species, and with the growing cognition, the brain too grows in size. The physical evolution of the primate species, wherein evidences are most apparent in skulls unearthed from the different periods, is very much connected to their behavioral evolution. Also, the bones in the primate's body changed through the different eras. With the increasing intelligence of the primate species , it is then the behavior that changes and transforms. This is then the evolvement of the primates' social behavior. Behavior of primates, in relation to social systems, Richard Wrangham stated that non-human primates' social systems are best classified by the amount of movement by females occurring between groups. He proposed four categories: (1) Female transfer system. It is in this category that the females move away from a group in which they were born. The females in a group are not closely related, whereas the males usually remain with their natal
